Architecture and Design Storage

Architects and designers are always at the front end of any storage design, and Rackline recognises that in order to specify or design storage systems, you need to be armed with the latest information.

When storage areas are done well, no one notices. However when they go wrong, it becomes everyone’s problem. At Rackline, our team have a long history of partnering with Architects and Construction businesses in the development of the perfect storage solutions for their clients.

We act as a partner to your team, helping you to provide storage that is both cost effective and meets the unique needs of your end client.

Working Closely with Your Team

Collaboration lies at the heart of every successful architectural project, and our team of design engineers liaise closely with you throughout your project to understand:

  • The collection or items to be stored – dimensions, weights, materials and growth.
  • Environmental constraints – humidity, light levels, temperature and access routes.
  • How users actually need to work in and around the storage.

Only then do we start proposing systems, from high density mobile shelving, static shelving and picture racking to specialist solutions for archives, labs and galleries.

Aligning with RIBA stages:

At Rackline, we support architects and construction teams at every key stage of the RIBA Plan of Work, helping turn storage requirements into fully considered, cost-effective solutions. From early feasibility through to final installation and aftercare, our team works alongside you to keep the project moving smoothly and ensure the final system meets both design intent and operational needs.

Stage 0–1: Strategic Definition and Brief

In the early stages, we help define the storage challenge, understand client requirements, and identify the most suitable approach for the space. This is where we can contribute initial advice, outline practical options, and support the project brief with clear technical input, helping to establish the right direction from the outset.

Stage 2–3: Concept and Spatial Coordination

As the design develops, our design engineers can provide site surveys, initial layout drawings, CAD blocks, and 3D visualisations where required. These outputs help architects and design teams test storage options within the wider spatial plan, coordinate requirements accurately, and communicate concepts clearly to clients

Stage 4: Technical Design

At technical design stage, we support the move from concept to fully detailed information. We can provide redit format layouts, specification support, BIM-ready product information, and National BIM Library content in Revit and IFC formats, helping ensure the chosen storage solution is ready for detailed coordination and sign-off.

Stage 5: Manufacturing and Construction

Once final designs are approved, we move into production, manufacturing, and fitting. Our role is to deliver a system that has been properly designed, fully coordinated, and manufactured to fit the agreed specification, helping reduce risk during delivery and installation.

Stage 6–7: Handover and Use

After installation, we continue to support the project with comprehensive aftercare to keep the system working smoothly. This gives clients confidence that their storage solution will continue to perform long after handover, with support available to maintain efficiency and reliability over time.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a shared priority for Rackline and the architectural industry. We focus on durable, long-lasting solutions and work with architects to support the creation of more sustainable spaces.

By prioritising quality materials and efficient manufacturing processes, we help reduce waste, minimise environmental impact, and deliver storage systems built to stand the test of time.
